Advancing Veterinary Science

Membership:

As result of donor program activities and the professionalism and commitment of Afghanistan's veterinarians themselves, the members of the AVA have an established client base, namely the nation's livestock owners. "Livestock is a key component in the livelihoods of more than 85% of Afghanistan's largely rural population". More than half of the nation's Gross Domestic Product is derived from agriculture, which employs 70-80% of the total population. Livestock production provides not only meat and milk for the population; it also provides most of the draught power for crop farming; manure for crop fertilization and cooking/heating fuel; and income, including export income, from hides and skins.

Veterinary care is recognized as critical to the survival and growth of this all-important livestock sector. Not only is this recognition accorded by government and NGO officials and planners; equally important, the value of this care is recognized by most livestock owners themselves.

Most of these veterinarians, assistant veterinarians, and paraveterinarians are counted as 2004 members by the AVA, as follows (figures rounded off to nearest 5).
